Grandstand: Sw*ndon (a), Saturday 14 September
Thu Sep 12, 2024 4:03 pm
The podcast have done our usual #4QuestionPreview and asked our counterparts to tell us what to expect - see below.
On the one hand, it's not a bad time to play Sw*ndon as they're in turmoil after a poor start and an awful away performance at Barrow last weekend. They've also - like us - got injuries and suspensions coming out of their ears. Harry Smith being out is a help as he has scored a fair few against us over the years for various teams. But even so, I think it could be a slog with our improvised back line. At least they've had a full week to train together.
Personally, I'd be delighted with a point.

.'.....it's not a bad time to play Swind*n....'
When a striker is going through am atrocious run of form he takes heart from the fact that sooner or later the ball will go in off his shoulder or shin and all will be well.
When a team are going through an atrocious run of form they take heart from the fact that sooner or later they will play Newport County.
60 years nearly, I remember the rotting railway sleepers on the popular bank at Somerton. I know what I'm talking about. And it's live on the tele. I've seen the universe aligned up like this before. Take my advice. Go somewhere where nobody knows you. Deny yourselves access to TV, radio and interweb. Stay away until at least Tuesday. The alternative is misery and humiliation.

I’ll be watching but not attending. Like Stan, I remember similar occasions too. A few weeks ago, I was beginning to think what an embarrassment of defenders we had! The idiocy of a County fan eh?
Back to tomorrow, so many defenders and we have no defence, I’m not sure Stan will remember this one but I attended a game in a disastrous County era of yesteryear where there we were at Somerton with a squad of seven wingers but on the day we were unable to take a corner! I still remember with horror ( and hysterical mirth ) the incident where we were taking a corner, there was a stumble over a bit of matting on the speedway track…and the ball impotently trickled over the line for a goal kick - it summed up that awful year. Let’s hope this current crisis is not a similar harbinger of football disaster.

Evening Mike. I remember the coconut matting. My worst experience was a mid 70s game v Shrewsbury. It was blowing a gale and a couple of the County players didn't make the game. My spec' in those days was by the corner down at the railway end. I caught a County clearance and sad to say I returned it to a Shrewsbury player and his corner led to a Shrewsbury goal. We lost 4-2.

I hope not. Last week a fair few games were shown via the red button on Sky+. I hope it is not me who is being an idiot, although it wouldn't be for the first time.

In a normal football week (I.E. Premier League week) Sky show 3 Championship matches, 2 League 1 and 2 League 2 matches at 12:30 on Saturday.
One game is on a Sky Channel (Millwall v Luton today), the others are on Sky Sports Plus. You can access these from either the red button or via the Sports tab on the Sky menu. Leeds is one of the matches but all matches should show on there.

Only two league 2 matches on. Us and AFC Wimbledon v MK Dons.
As per my post. One championship game on Sky main channel. And 2 matches from Championship, League One and League Two on Sky Sports Plus. All kick off at 12:30. This is the usual number for a normal football weekend. (Only international weekends or FA Cup weekends will all league matches be on)

Yes. I mistakenly throught that all 6 L2 matches scheduled were today. Four are later in the season.

Once again, the last player to touch the ball before the opponent put it in the net was playing for County.

You're right again 0-3 25 mins. Glad I'm going to the cinema at half time.

Embarrassing defending, totally clueless. Don’t have a clue where we go from here except down. Beyond a joke, we look amateur.

Pains me to say this as I like the attitude of Nick Townsend. But he has a weakness on his near post and has a weakness getting down to the shots which don't get airborne. Combine that with his average distribution and in my view every League 2 manager will have picked this up.
Hopefully Swindon will take their foot off the gas in the second half. If they don't this could be double figures.

Before you can play football you have to win the fight. It's basic and I hope that today and last Saturday has hammered that home.

47.7% possession and not one shot on target says it all. Tippy tappy is all well and good but it has to lead to some end product.

Absolutely right, that’s just a basic fact of football life.Stan A. Einstein wrote:Before you can play football you have to win the fight. It's basic and I hope that today and last Saturday has hammered that home.
I really fear for us in the foreseeable future. We’re too lightweight and while possession stats have improved we possess absolutely no threat! Not one shot on target!
Add to that a defence that is not just really poor but also reckless and you have a combination that promises relegation.
Today reminded me of the old Newport McCounty back in the Somerton days. This performance sent a chill through my veins.
