Grandstand: Grimsby (H), 16 November
Wed Nov 13, 2024 8:06 pm
Apologies for posting this earlier than usual. Am away for a few days at the end of the week, and wanted to share the video below for those who might find it interesting. It's a chat between me and a couple of Grimsby Town podcasters (from the DN35 podcast) about what we can expect from Saturday's visitors.
Sounds as though Grimsby - like us - have had a topsy-turvey, unpredictable season. Clearly they start heavy favourites given our bad run of form, but football is full of wonderful surprises.
Predictions?

Not confident about this one.
I expect a home defeat and the crowd to start turning on Jardim.
Hope I'm wrong though.

The match is live on Sky Sports+
People are becoming seriously concerned so maybe there will be a reaction to another defeat.

I fear that you are both right if we lose without putting up a good fight.
We were tolerant of Coughlan after 8 successive defeats but he had built a rapport with the fans. I am not getting that vibe from the current leadership.
I hope that we win 5-0 Saturday of course but I can't see where the goals are coming from.

Attendance is likely to be low with Turkey v Wales kicking off at 17.00...

Is it not being shown in the marquee after our game? I think we have done similar in the past.

Another dismal half of football. No urgency and why keep passing back to Townsend when he's looking like an accident waiting to happen.
To call the referee incompetent would be vastly exaggerating his abilities. Woeful performance. Shocking.

I thought it was rather better from our lot. Should have won the game but finishing has now become a problem.

Penalty or no penalty?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5KIPcCOKHg
(incident at 0:47)
For me the player takes the ball cleanly and with precision. It's also not a two footed challenge.
It's possible that from the referee's point of view and due to the speed of the incident, it might have seemed like a tackle from behind. I reckon that this is the reason he gave it.
Some interesting things that I noted while watching it back:
-The ref seems to delay in making the call while waiting to see if advantage can be played. If it was a clear penalty, wouldn't you blow up immediately? It could be that his slow reaction was due to him taking a moment to process what he'd witnessed.
-The offending player reacts by collapsing to his knees with his head in his hands rather than getting involved in the protests. Experience tells me that players are most likely to do this when they know they've done wrong. While I believe the player was in the right on this occasion, I do find it an interesting reaction.
David Artell sums it up: “The penalty decision was horrific. Both benches agreed that’s just not a penalty. Referees make mistakes and that was 100 per cent a mistake. It was a clean tackle, a brilliant tackle."

Like him, I'm relieved that the penalty was saved (and a great save it was) even though we'd have benefitted from the injustice. A draw was a fair result.
